At the demise of Craft New Zealand back in the '90s the archives were so fought over that there was a public meeting to which came interested parties from all over the country to hear and be heard. The Dowse won the day and became the depository as it was then seen in a leadership role for the craft media for the country due to its exhibition programme and its collection. The Dowse changed Directors and directions and became a regional gallery serving its area north of Wellington instead of the national centre for craft media. The very fine and full craft based and historically important collection also changed direction although some additions were made I believe but more those fitting a vis.arts criteria. The Dowse also changed name to The New Dowse.
Now there is another Director and direction toward a full-tilt Vis Arts agenda in rivalry with other galleries in the region - particularly those in Wellington, some half hour away. It has changed name again, back to The Dowse. But what about those Crafts Council archives? On inquiry they are currently 'stored off-site and cannot be accessed' with no information as to when they might again be available for researchers or historians.
Australia take warning...

thanks for your post. I see Object have received generous support and Aus Co have promised a National Craft Strategic Initiative. It will be interesting to see how these initiatives interpret, reflect, engage, activate, enrich or enable craft across the range and depth of its disciplines. It would seem that most institutions concerned with advocacy or education of craft are struggling either to exist or remain relevant. This doesn't necessarily reflect the vibrancy of practice, however in some areas I feel we are lacking particularly in terms of leadership, critical discourse and dialogue opportunities, exhibitions which critique or locate practice, active collecting by institutions to name a few. It would be great to see Australia lead the world in valuing and promoting craft as form of cultural capital, but it seem as a nation we have bigger fish to fry. regards roseanne

Here is a note from Moyra Ellliot, craft writer from New Zealand:

Just briefly... your point about what happens to archives....
